From Wednesday 1 October 2025, petrol 95 went up 8c a litre to R21.63 in Gauteng, and the wholesale price of diesel (0.05% sulphur) went down 10c to R19.34.

Gauteng pump prices for petrol. Coastal prices are lower by the cost of transport inland. Diesel and paraffin have no single pump price, so these are CEF's wholesale and maximum retail price rows.

What moved it
Each month's change is set by the review period before it, here from Friday 29 August 2025 to Thursday 25 September 2025. Every day of it, CEF compares what fuel actually cost to import (the Basic Fuel Price) with the cost already built into the pump price. The period's average gap, the over- or under-recovery, is how much the price has to move to catch up.
Petrol 95 cost on average 3c a litre more to import than was built into the price (an under-recovery). Its import cost averaged R10.04 a litre. On its own that called for a change of +3c. The official change, +8c, was within a few cents of it.
Diesel (0.05% sulphur) cost on average 10c a litre less to import than was built into the price (an over-recovery). Its import cost averaged R10.79 a litre. On its own that called for a change of −10c. The official change, −10c, was within a few cents of it.
The rand averaged R17.54 to the US dollar over the period, stronger than the R17.73 of the period before (a stronger rand pulls fuel prices down).
