What moved it

Each month's change is set by the review period before it, here from Friday 1 August 2025 to Thursday 28 August 2025. Every day of it, CEF compares what fuel actually cost to import (the Basic Fuel Price) with the cost already built into the pump price. The period's average gap, the over- or under-recovery, is how much the price has to move to catch up.

Petrol 95 cost on average 4c a litre less to import than was built into the price (an over-recovery). Its import cost averaged R10.05 a litre. On its own that called for a change of −4c. The official change, −4c, was within a few cents of it.

Diesel (0.05% sulphur) cost on average 55c a litre less to import than was built into the price (an over-recovery). Its import cost averaged R10.71 a litre. On its own that called for a change of −55c. The official change, −56c, was within a few cents of it.

The rand averaged R17.73 to the US dollar over the period.
